Thousands of miners in the “nicest mine in the world” produced 12.000 tons of coal a day, which was processed and refined on-site. But the last “shift” was in 1986. The “territory” from coal and steel died during these years. Also in 1993 the coking plant at Zollverein closed.

One of the most important international design institutions

Nevertheless a centre for culture and creative industry with a main-focus on design and architecture developed at the vast area. One of the most important international design institutions, the reddot award, was founded here as well as the spacious exhibition rooms of the coal Zeche Zollverein.

Also the Zollverein-Kubus, which was designed by the Japanese architecture bureau SANAA under the leadership of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa is worth a visit because of its exceptional architecture. Altogether there is much to see: No wonder that the area was constantly used for the background of expensive movie productions such as Wim Wender´s “Palermo Shooting”.

Note: During the next trip into the territory you should plan a stop at Zollverein.
